How to choose the right DJ for your wedding: 10 questions you must ask

📅 22 October 2025 ⏱ 7 min read 🎵 DJ Selection, Guide

The DJ is one of the most important suppliers at any wedding. A poor choice can cost you a lively dance floor and leave indelible memories (in the bad sense). But how do you spot the right one? Ask these 10 questions, and pay close attention to the answers.

1How many weddings have you performed and how long have you been doing them?

Experience is key for DJ services. Weddings have specific pressures that other events do not: the timing of the first dance, the arrival of guests after the ceremony, the mood after the midnight buffet. Each of these situations requires experience and intuition that cannot be read from a manual.

A good answer: Over 50 weddings completed, active for at least 3-5 years. Bonus: worked at various venue types (rural locations, historic halls, gardens, hotels).

2What does the contract look like and what is the advance payment amount?

Every professional DJ works on the basis of a contract. Without a contract you have no protection: neither you nor the DJ. A deposit (usually 30-50 % of the total amount) protects the DJ against last-minute cancellation, but the conditions must be clearly written down.

A good answer: A clear contract with cancellation terms, a cancellation policy, service specification and deposit amount. Payment of the deposit by bank transfer (not cash only) is another sign of a professional.

3Do you have backup equipment? What happens when the technology fails?

Technical faults can occur. A burnt-out amplifier, damaged cable, or laptop failure: no equipment is immortal. A professional DJ has a backup set ready and a Plan B for every scenario.

A good answer: Backup notebook, backup mixer, backup devices for critical components. The DJ should be able to describe exactly what is backed up and how quickly they can switch to the backup (ideally under 2 minutes).

4How flexible are you regarding the setlist and guests' requests?

Having control over the setlist is a legitimate request: the DJ is a professional and knows what works on the dancefloor. But total rigidity is problematic. The outcome should be collaboration, not a one-sided decision.

A good answer: The DJ should accept the list of mandatory songs, the list of prohibited songs, and consider guests' requests situationally according to the mood on the dance floor. Warning: A DJ who accepts everything without discussion will likely fail to keep the dance floor together.

5What are the technical requirements at the site?

Every venue is different. Historic halls have volume limits, outdoor spaces require larger PA systems, and low ceilings restrict subwoofers. The DJ should either know the venue or be willing to visit it.

A good answer: The DJ will inquire about the hall's capacity, layout, available electrical connections and any noise limits. Bonus: The DJ knows your specific venue or is willing to visit it in advance.

6Is your price all-inclusive or are there hidden costs included?

The price "from 15 000 Kč" may look completely different in the final invoice. Transport, parking, overtime hours, technical requirements, all of these can increase the cost by thousands of crowns.

A good answer: The DJ should state the exact price including transport (or a clear rate per km), preparation and departure, and potentially overtime costs (usually an additional 500-1,500 Kč/hour).

7Can you give me contact details for references: newlyweds?

References are gold when choosing a DJ. Anyone can create profiles on websites and social media. Real people who paid for a DJ at their own wedding and are willing to talk about it provide the best verification.

A good answer: DJ will readily provide you with 2-3 contacts from newlyweds. On bookdj.cz, testimonials are an integral part of every DJ's profile.

8Do you have professional liability insurance?

Insurance is a less exciting topic, but crucial. If the DJ damages the venue's equipment or causes injury, without insurance either you or the DJ will be in trouble.

A good answer: A professional DJ has liability insurance for damage caused in the course of their profession and can provide proof.

9Is there a preparatory meeting before the wedding?

The best DJs will meet with you before the wedding, in person or online, to discuss the timeline, first dance, music preferences, MC tone of voice, specific moments (cake cutting, bouquet toss) and coordination with other suppliers.

A good answer: A preparatory meeting is standard for a professional, not an exception. At least 4-6 weeks before the wedding.

10What happens if you fall ill or an unexpected situation arises?

This question reveals whether the DJ is a genuine professional with backing or a soloist without a safety net. Anyone can fall ill: the question is what then happens to your wedding.

A good answer: DJ has a network of colleagues it works with and will provide a replacement of comparable quality in the event of illness or emergency. This should be covered in the contract.
