DJ or band for a wedding? A comparison of costs and experience

📅 11 February 2026 ⏱ 6 min read 🎸 DJ vs Band, Comparison

DJ or live band? This question divides wedding couples across generations. Both approaches have their strengths: the key is knowing what you expect from the music and what your budget is. Here is an objective comparison.

Costs: Price overview in the Czech Republic (2026)

🎧 Wedding DJ
  • Prague: 15 000 - 35 000 Kč
  • Regions: 8 000 - 20 000 Kč
  • Premium DJ: 35 000 - 60 000 Kč
  • Typically 6-8 hours
  • 1 person (or 2 with a moderator)
🎸 Live band
  • Prague: 40 000 - 120 000 Kč
  • Regions: 25 000 - 70 000 Kč
  • Premium band: 120 000+ Kč
  • 3-5 sets of 45 minutes with breaks
  • 4-10 members (+ technician)

The cost difference is significant: a band typically costs 2-4 times more than a DJ. We also factor in technical requirements: a band needs a stage (minimum area 4×4 m), sound reinforcement, and possibly accommodation for events further away.

Range of services and flexibility

DJ It has a practically unlimited repertoire. Want to move from 80s disco hits through Czech pop-rock classics to today's electronic chart-toppers within a single hour? No problem. The DJ can respond to guests' immediate requests without pauses or the need for testing.

The band It plays what it can, and what it has rehearsed. A quality wedding band has a repertoire of 60-120 songs that are well played and sound excellent. However, requests for specific songs not in the repertoire will be rejected or must be planned months in advance.

Winner: DJ - for maximum repertoire flexibility and real-time response to audience mood.

Space and technical requirements

DJ It requires an area of approximately 2×2 m, two electrical connections (16A) and sufficient soundproofing. Ideal for historic halls, smaller restaurants, gardens and interiors with low ceilings.

The band requires a stage of at least 4×4 m (for a 4-5 piece band), fixed electrical supply, a soundproofed wall for monitors, and backstage facilities for changing and tuning. In some historic venues, the band simply cannot enter: neither physically nor from a noise perspective.

Winner: DJ - works practically anywhere, with no space requirements.

Atmosphere and the live feel

Here, the band clearly wins. Live music delivers energy that no reproduction can fully replace. The musician's expression during a solo, improvisation, interaction with the audience, these are moments guests remember for years. Especially at the first dance or a surprise for the bride/groom, a live band is an unforgettable experience.

DJ It can be very energetic and entertaining, but the "live" element is simply missing. An experienced DJ with charisma can get the dance floor moving just as well as a band, yet the atmosphere is different.

Winner: Band - for an unforgettable live experience and emotional moments.

When is a band worth it?

When is DJ the better choice?

Hybrid solution: Band for the ceremony, DJ for the party

The best of both worlds? Many couples combine both options: string quartet or string ensemble for the ceremony (3 000-8 000 Kč) and DJ for evening parties (15 000-25 000 Kč). The result is an emotional ceremony with live music and an energetic dance party with no limits on the repertoire.

An alternative is band for the first 2-3 sets (dinner, first dance, opening dance) and a DJ for the rest of the evening. This combination costs approximately 50 000-80 000 Kč, but guests get both.
