DJ or Band for Your Destination Wedding in Prague?
When you're flying in for your own wedding, every decision carries a bit more weight - you can't easily change your mind once you've landed. Here's a straight, no-sales-pitch comparison of a DJ and a live band for a Prague destination wedding, including where a hybrid of both makes the most sense.
The Cost Difference
- Typically 15,000 - 35,000 CZK for a full evening
- Premium DJ: 35,000 - 60,000 CZK
- Usually 6-8 hours, no breaks
- 1 person (2 with a dedicated MC)
- Typically 40,000 - 120,000 CZK
- Premium band: 120,000+ CZK
- 3-5 sets of 45 minutes, with breaks between
- 4-10 musicians, plus a sound technician
A band generally costs two to four times more than a DJ, and that's before you factor in travel and, for a band flying in from further afield, accommodation. The gap is the single biggest reason most couples on a fixed destination-wedding budget default to a DJ for the reception.
Space and Logistics (Especially in Historic Venues)
A DJ needs a modest footprint - roughly 2x2 metres, two power sockets, and reasonable sound insulation. That fits into almost anything: a castle hall, a garden marquee, a restaurant with a low ceiling, a courtyard with awkward acoustics.
A band needs a proper stage area (often 4x4 metres or more for five musicians), stable power, monitor space, and somewhere to change and warm up. If your venue is a historic building with limited floor space or protected walls, a full band may simply not fit - physically or in terms of the volume the venue allows. This matters more for destination weddings than couples often expect, since the venue is frequently booked before the entertainment is finalised, and gorgeous historic rooms are often the tightest ones.
Flexibility on the Night
A DJ can move from a slow first dance straight into a request from your uncle for something from decades ago, without missing a beat. There's no rehearsal required and no fixed setlist - a skilled DJ reads the room and adjusts in real time, which matters when your guest list spans several countries and generations.
A band plays what it has rehearsed - typically a repertoire of 60-120 songs, performed well. A specific request outside that repertoire will usually be declined, or would need to be arranged and rehearsed months in advance. If a broad, ever-changing mix across your international guest list matters to you, this is where a DJ wins outright.
What You Give Up Without Live Music
None of this means a band isn't worth it - live music brings something a DJ genuinely can't replicate: the visible energy of musicians playing, a saxophone solo during your first dance, the sense of occasion that comes from watching people actually perform. For couples who want that specific feeling, especially around the ceremony or first dance, it's worth the extra cost and logistics.
Hybrid Options: Best of Both
Many couples flying in for a Czech wedding split the difference rather than choosing one over the other:
- Live strings for the ceremony, then a DJ for the evening reception - a string quartet or trio gives the ceremony genuine live-music warmth without the space and volume demands of a full band. If you'd like this option, we work alongside Cellisti.cz, professional string musicians for weddings in Prague.
- A small live act for the cocktail hour - a duo or trio during drinks and dinner, followed by a DJ once dancing starts, so you get a live feel earlier in the evening without paying full-band rates for the whole night.
- A band for the first few sets, DJ for the rest - guests get the live performance during dinner and the first dance, then unbroken dancing once the band packs down.
